Building work on the new £4m Aylesham Health Centre that is set to transform primary care for the people of Aylesham in Kent, has reached an important milestone.

The new health centre, which is being provided by Assura on behalf of NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent (PCT), has been quickly taking shape and has now reached watertight stage with the completion of the roofing and the installation of windows.

When completed in March 2009, the new facility will house GPs currently located in outdated facilities alongside other local health services including a community dental service and will also include an on site pharmacy and ten flats.

It is hoped that the new health centre will become the cornerstone of a wider, residential-led regeneration initiative which will see the local village increase by around 56 per cent with around 1,000 additional homes, as outlined in the ‘Aylesham Master Plan’ published by Dover District Council.

Simon Gould, development manager at Assura, said: "We are very pleased with the progress of the building work so far. We are confident that Aylesham Health Centre will quickly become an asset to the local community, which will greatly benefit local people, offering them improved access to health services."

Commenting on the scheme, a spokesperson for NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent, said: "NHS Eastern and Coastal Kent (PCT) is pleased that the new Aylesham Health Centre building is taking shape. The new facility represents the commitment that the PCT has to providing modern, purpose built, 21st century health facilities to the local community.

"The PCT is keen to ensure that local people continue to be involved in their local health centre and would welcome any member of the public wanting to become involved to call the PCT Patient Public Engagement Team on 01304 216858."

Building work is being conducted by Geoffrey Osborne Ltd and began last November. Completion is scheduled for early 2009.
