Work on the much needed Freshney Green Primary Care Centre in Grimsby is progressing well and completion is on target for next summer.
Local people will have noticed the building work coming along after the steel frame was raised earlier this month. Shortly, the building will begin to take shape as the floors and walls are put into place.
The centre is being developed and funded by Assura, one of the UK’s leading investors in and developers of primary care centres, who were appointed along with their development partner, LSP Developments, in December 2006.
When complete, the new health centre will add a great deal of convenience for local people, with a number of services available in a single location, saving some visits to the hospital.
The state-of-the-art 7,000 sq m building will accommodate the co-location of the Field House Medical Centre, Dr Collett and Partners and the Woodford Medical Centre, who will provide extensive one stop NHS primary care services to over 30,000 patients in the local community.
An added bonus and convenience for patients is that the new centre will also house the Cromwell Dental Practice.
During a recent site visit, Dr Julian Clark, a GP at the Woodford Medical Centre, said: "It is really exciting to see how quickly it is going up. You really get a sense that something big is happening.
"We can't wait to move in so that we can continue to provide the high quality of services that we already offer, but from more appropriate, purpose-built surroundings."
The health centre is part of a wider showpiece housing scheme developed in conjunction with Shoreline Housing Partnership and Stamford Homes, which will completely transform the local area with over 440 new homes.
To cope with the expected population increase related to this scheme and any consequent service expansion, Assura has included over 1,000 sq m of additional space in the health centre.
Commenting on the progress of building work, Amanda Horley, northern regional manager of Assura, said:
"We are very pleased with the progress of the building work so far. The Freshney Green Medical Centre will be a fantastic new health facility, which will greatly benefit local people and will quickly become an asset to the community."
