Assura Pharmacy promotes sexual health week

9 August 2007

To coincide with Sexual Health Week (6-12th August), Assura Pharmacy is playing its part in encouraging people to protect themselves against STDs and unwanted pregnancy by offering one-third off all Durex condoms.

So whatever you’re doing this summer, whether it’s going on holiday or just having fun at home, there’s plenty of time to pop into your local Assura store and stock up.

Chlamydia is the most common STD in the UK, and last year there were almost 104,000 diagnosed cases in sexual health clinics alone. The number of sexually active people under 25 infected with Chlamydia is now thought to be just under half a million – about one in ten of the population.

The Health Protection Agency estimates that around 10,000 of these people are unaware of their condition because the infections do not always show signs or symptoms. Cases of genital herpes have also risen, and it is estimated that up to 10% of UK adults may be infected.

Assura Pharmacy aims to provide local communities with more convenient and accessible health care and this latest promotion encourages patients to take preventative measures for their overall health and well-being. Assura Pharmacy currently operates 14 stores across the UK and is on track to have 20 open by the end of 2007.

Paul Sanderson Pharmacy Manager of Assura Pharmacy Macclesfield predicts the Durex promotion to be popular.

“It’s a sad fact that despite extensive awareness campaigns, STDs continue to rise among young people. We believe the promotion will encourage people to take advantage, be responsible and stock up. We aim to support people every step of the way, offering guidance, encouragement and reassurance.”

Matthew Clegg, Commercial Manager of Assura Pharmacy said: “We are delighted to implement the condom promotion for Sexual Health Week this year. We hope it will help educate our customers about safer sex and stress the importance of using a condom as the only form of contraception to protect against both sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy.”
