Basingstoke’s new GP-led health centre opened its doors to patients today at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, providing medical and dental services to both registered and unregistered patients, with or without an appointment.
Hampshire Healthcare Centre (Basingstoke) is run by Assura Hampshire Health on behalf of NHS Hampshire and is open from 8am to 8pm, 365 days per year.
Based at the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, the Centre benefits from the excellent existing local transport links and patients can now access a wide range of health services including pre-bookable and same day GP appointments closer to home.
Other services include flu vaccinations, contraceptive services, chlamydia screening, minor surgery and stop smoking services. The Healthcare Centre also provides pre-bookable and same day dental appointments.
Throughout the busy Christmas period, services will remain open from 8am to 8pm except for Christmas Day when the Centre will open at the slightly later time of 8:30am, closing at 6:30pm. The dental service will not be open on Bank Holidays.
Commenting on the opening, Helen Clanchy, director of primary care for NHS Hampshire, said: "We are delighted to offer patients not just extended access to GPs and dentists but also a more appropriate place than A&E for people with minor problems.
"Increasing access to GP and dental services is a priority for NHS Hampshire and the opening of the new Healthcare Centre represents a major advance toward that goal. The people who live and work in Basingstoke told us what they would like to see in the new Centre and I am delighted to see these services commencing today."
The service expects to develop a registered GP patient list of 1,000 in year one, increasing to 3,000 by year five. Non-registered patients seen by the medical service are anticipated to be 40,000 in the first year rising to 50,000 in the second. The dental team is expected to see 8,000 patients through the same day service.
